Telemundo Rated Lean Left in April 2025 Independent Review

An AllSides April 2025 Independent Review returned a Lean Left bias rating for Telemundo.

An AllSides reviewer noted that Telemundo crossposts several stories from NBC News (Lean Left), translating them into Spanish.

On Trump potentially seeking a third term, Telemundo highlighted in a subheadline that the move is “prohibited by the Constitution.” This is in contrast to sources like FOX News (Right) that note how FDR served more than two terms as President, showcasing how Telemundo shares some perspectives with the left, with respect to Trump. Moreover, Telemundo typically highlights stories on immigration near the top of their homepage, what is known as story placement bias, and frames these stories more favorably towards the immigrants themselves. The reviewer noted how Telemundo’s audience is made up of primarily Spanish speakers who are more likely to be affected by Trump’s immigration policies; as such the quantity and bias shown by Telemundo is likely done to align with their primary audience.

While Telemundo has showcased similar viewpoints to outlets on the left, the outlet misses this classification when accounting for Mexican politics. On coverage of Mexico receiving less harsh tariffs from Trump, Telemundo primarily asked Claudia Sheinbaum – Mexican President – what concessions Mexico had to make for this “preferential treatment.” Notably, on the day of the press conference, Sheinbaum announced 18 programs for economic growth, which Telemundo did not enquire about or cover in a separate article. As the representative of the Morena Party (Left party in Mexico), Telemundo’s critique of Sheinbaum – coupled with more critical coverage of Trump and conservative policy on immigration – indicates a Lean Left bias.
