Mamdani and Trump Meet at White House, Discuss Housing and Immigration
Summary from the AllSides News Team
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump met at the White House on Thursday to discuss housing and immigration.
NYC Housing: Mamdani presented Trump with a mocked-up frontpage Daily News newspaper headlined "Trump To City: Let's Build," a play on a famous 1975 article headlined "Ford To City: Drop Dead" after then-President Gerald Ford rejected a federal bailout for New York City. Mamdani called the meeting "productive" and a Mamdani spokesperson said Trump was "enthusiastic" after being presented with a proposal for a housing project in New York City with more than 12,000 homes.
Immigration: The two also discussed the status of Columbia University student Elmina Aghayeva, who was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents Thursday morning. Following the meeting, Mamdani received a phone call from Trump informing him that "she will be released imminently." Hours after the announcement, Columbia released a statement confirming her release.
An Unlikely Relationship: This was not the first time the two had met. In their last meeting, they showed signs of common ground on safety, housing, and protecting New Yorkers. Some outlets on the right called the first meeting "a total love-fest" while some others on the left said Mamdani "clearly won over Trump." Following the meeting Thursday, Axios (Lean Left bias) called their relationship "made-for-TV" and said Mamdani "charm[ed] the president with a mocked-up tabloid." The New York Post (Lean Right) took quite a similar tone, saying Mamdani "flatters" Trump "in secret DC trip." The Wall Street Journal (Center) called the relationship a "bromance," saying it is due to the "power of populism."
What's Next: It remains unclear whether there is a specific agenda for the proposed building project, and some have wondered whether it will come to fruition at all. However, the unlikely partnership between Mamdani and Trump seems to be on stable ground for the time being, and many are wondering exactly how the pair will work together moving forward.
