About Univision's Bias Rating

Univision is a news media source with an AllSides Media Bias Rating™ of Left.

Univision Rated Left in an April 2025 Independent Review

An AllSides April 2025 Independent Review returned a Left bias rating for Univision.

An AllSides reviewer noted that Univision’s online media content generally offers critical views of Donald Trump, while offering more sympathetic views on social issues like immigration. On the White House’s decision to block certain media outlets from press briefings, Univision provides the perspective of an expert who calls this move an “engano colosal” (huge lie). This is known as bias by viewpoint placement. On Trump's Tariffs (Liberation Day), Univision framed the story to focus on the negative reactions – noting how fears of a recession “son mas reales” (are more realistic). Additionally, Univision created a subheading focused on The Economist’s “duro editorial” (harsh editorial) of Trump’s tariffs, an example of sensationalism and general disapproval of Trump as more closely associated with Left outlets. On immigration, Univision has an entire section dedicated to stories on immigration where they typically offer favorable perspectives on the immigrants themselves. An op-ed by Jorge Ramos – Univision co-anchor – exemplifies this by stating how “It is absurd to argue, as many Republicans do, that it's possible to have a safe and secure border” an example of an opinion stated as fact. As such, Univision’s coverage and perspectives on immigration is more closely aligned with the left.

The reviewer also noted how Univision fits in the political sphere for Mexican politics. While Univision has historically been aligned with the PRI party of Mexico (typically seen as a Lean Right party), the fall of the PRI party and the rise of the Morena party (typically referred to as a Left party) has created new dynamics with how Univision aligns itself within Mexican politics. Sheinbaum has critiqued media outlets that push out “Trump propaganda” – including Univision in her critique. Univision has covered the story while focusing on the “controversy” of the proclamation from the Mexican President, showcasing how Univision is not entirely aligned with the left. However, due to their use of sensationalism in headlines often criticizing Trump, and the extensive coverage of immigration, which often slants the narrative to benefit the immigrant, Univision is rated Left.

Owner: TelevisaUnivision Inc.

Univision is an American Spanish-language free-to-air television network and the US's largest provider of Spanish-language content. Programming includes news, telenovelas and drama series, sports, sitcoms, reality and variety series, and imported Spanish-language feature films aimed at the Latino community. Univision was founded in 1962 by Raoul A. Cortez, Emilio Nicolas Sr., and Rene Anselmo. In 1987, Nicolas sold his stake in the network to a partnership of Hallmark Cards and Televisa for 25 years, which formed Univision Holdings Inc. to operate the network and its stations. Subsequently, Hallmark Cards (which owned a 63.5% interest), First Chicago Venture Capital (which acquired 21.5%) and several other private investors (which collectively owned the remaining 15% held in a trust) purchased the SIN stations and adopted a new name for the network, Univision. In April 2021, Televisa announced that their ownership stake in Univision would increase to 45% and would merge its media, content, and production assets with Univision, creating its new parent company TelevisaUnivision. The group also owns UniMás, Galavision, Univision Telenovelas, and TUDN.
