About 1440's Bias Rating

1440 is a news media source with an AllSides Media Bias Rating™ of Center.

1440 is an online platform with a daily newsletter that summarizes national and global news stories in a brief, fact-focused format. The outlet calls itself “a fact-driven news and knowledge resource that respects your time and intelligence,” often covering a wide range of political, scientific, and cultural topics each day (Retrieved 8/4/2025). 

What a "Center" Rating Means

Sources with an AllSides Media Bias Rating of Center either do not show much predictable media bias, display a balance of articles with left and right biases, or equally balance left and right perspectives.

Center doesn't mean better! 1440 Rated Center in July 2025 Small Group Editorial Review

A Small Group Editorial Review by a multi-partisan panel of three reviewers rated 1440 as Center with a weighted average of -0.03. 

The panel reviewed over 20 newsletters published by 1440 between late June and mid-July 2025, along with several of the outlet’s online “Dive Deeper” explainers. All reviewers agreed 1440’s original content is largely balanced, straightforward, and non-sensational. The outlet summarizes events using neutral language, emphasizes observable facts, and often cites original sources such as government publications and data when available.

The Center and Lean Left reviewers both gave 1440 an exact Center rating (0.0). They commended the outlet for its use of neutral language and consistent focus on observable facts. The Center reviewer described the political coverage as “extremely unbiased,” with minimal commentary or additional context beyond the facts. The Lean Left reviewer echoed this assessment, noting that while the facts-only approach made complex stories digestible, it occasionally resulted in underdeveloped coverage. 

The Lean Right reviewer agreed with the overall assessment but rated the outlet slightly to the left of Center (-0.1) due to bias by source selection. While 1440 frequently cites data and government sources, the reviewer observed that when third-party news links are used—especially in political coverage—they were exclusively drawn from outlets AllSides rated as on the left or Center at the time of review (such as CNBC, CBS, ABC, AP, The Hill, and BBC). The reviewer did not weigh this heavily, noting that the linked articles were generally balanced, 1440’s own summaries remained neutral, and the exclusion of right-leaning sources could reflect the current composition of the media landscape.
