Dear Friends,
Like many of you, I was heartbroken to learn of the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk. Regardless of where you stand politically, violence like this impacts us all. It is a sobering reminder that our nation is in deep trouble.
It is not enough to be sad. It is not enough to be mad. We must act and act wisely if we are to restore civil society and reinvigorate our nation.
This is why AllSides exists.
For over a decade, we’ve been sounding the alarm about both the problem and the fundamental driver behind it: the way we get our information, and the way we talk (or don’t talk) to one another, is pushing us toward division, hatred, and yes, violence. When my co-founder Scott and I launched our first prototype of AllSides 13 years ago, few believed us when we said the internet, even with all its promises of connection, would actually cause divisions to worsen. But we’ve all seen it happen.
The problem isn’t simply politics. It’s how we consume information and how we communicate with each other. Polarized media, partisan rancor, and social media echo chambers radicalize us against each other, dehumanize those we disagree with, and fuel despair.
Data and research show the way technology has changed information flows is a critical driver, not just in the US, but worldwide. While partisans try to blame the other side, we know that the problem is more fundamental than that.
AllSides deeply understands the problem and is doing something about it.
We show you news and perspectives from the left, center, and right, freeing us from those toxic filter bubbles that turn us against each other. We build technology and tools that help people hear each other, not just shout past each other. We’ve spent more than a decade testing solutions to broaden understanding, reduce division, and restore balance.
We do this at AllSides.com. We do this for even more people through partners and clients in schools, media, nonprofits and other organizations. We do this with cutting edge technologies and services, and will soon be announcing some new exciting tools and services.
That’s why I’m writing to you today: don’t lose hope. There is a better way forward.
AllSides is one of thousands of organizations combating dangerous division. Friends of ours like Living Room Conversations, Braver Angels and The Listen First Project each run and support programs that effectively reduce divides.
Together, we can build a culture where disagreement doesn’t lead to dehumanization, and differences don’t lead to violence. AllSides invites you to be part of the solution, not the fight.
Moving forward,
John Gable
