  • Trump admin releases 34 gun policy reforms
  • Texas executions reach 600 since 1976
  • Government launches Moms.gov, IVF expansions

What the Left Missed

Teen Dies from Abortion Complications at Planned Parenthood

What’s The Story? Alexis Arguello, 18, died from abortion complications last year, according to an autopsy released on Tuesday. Arguello reportedly underwent a second-trimester abortion at Planned Parenthood in Fort Collins, Colorado, before developing disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) – a condition in which parts of the fetus cause blood clots after later-term abortions.

Why The Miss? Colorado’s state constitution legalizes abortion as a "fundamental human right” through all stages of pregnancy, and the state sanctions roughly 15,000 abortions per year. The stringency of Colorado’s legislation, coupled with the inflammatory nature of this story and its conservative-supporting narrative, likely deterred media on the left from coverage.

What Everyone Missed

White House Launches ‘Moms.gov,’ IVF Expansions

What’s The Story? The White House announced “new initiatives to lower costs for families, expand access to fertility care, and deliver meaningful support for mothers across America” on Mother’s Day. Among the initiatives are the “Moms.gov” resource site and expanded in-vitro fertilization (IVF) access through TrumpRx.

Why The Miss? While some outlets across the political spectrum covered this story, many either omitted the story or provided slanted coverage. HuffPost (Left bias) criticized the new sites’ use of “faith-based pregnancy centers” and used the negatively-connotated term “anti-abortion.” Conversely, Life News (Not Rated) said the site “support[s] pregnant women.” Many other outlets avoided the nuanced story, as it doesn’t fully fit a left or right narrative; IVF is a conflicting issue for many pro-life and pro-choice conservatives, as are pregnancy resource centers for many liberals.

What the Right Missed

Trump Admin Releases 34 Gun Policy Reforms

What’s The Story? The Justice Department (DOJ) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) released 34 notices of final and proposed gun policy reforms in late April. The reforms – categorized as 5 modernizations, 7 burden reductions, 4 repeals, 12 clarifications, and 6 alignments – follow Trump’s “Protecting Second Amendment Rights” executive order from Feb. 2025 and are reportedly the first of an impending series.

Notably, one proposed reform aims to repeal the Youth Handgun Safety Act notification requirement, which requires that federal firearms licensees display a notice specifying that, with exceptions, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to possess a handgun.

The DOJ argued that the proposed reform “reduces an unnecessary burden” on federal firearms licensees. Some also speculated the collective measures could legalize an “Amazon for guns” by using workarounds to legalize weapons deliveries.

Why The Miss? Though media on the right often celebrates deregulatory measures in government, outlets might have dodged this story entirely to avoid highlighting the controversial nature of repealing the Youth Handgun Safety Act notification requirement.

Texas Executes 600th Person Since Death Penalty Reinstatement

What’s The Story? Texas executed inmate Edward Busby last week, marking the state’s 600th use of capital punishment since the US Supreme Court reinstated the measure in 1976. Busby received a lethal injection on Thursday for robbing, abducting, and murdering 78-year-old Laura Crane in 2004. The Supreme Court lifted an appeals court stay that suggested Busby was intellectually disabled, though all three liberal justices dissented.

Why The Miss? The Texas Tribune (Lean Left bias) asserted the ruling “reinforc[es] Texas’ position as the nation's leader in capital punishment.” Florida, another majority-conservative state, is second. Polling suggests that conservatives generally oppose assisted suicide yet support the death penalty, making Texas’ case subject to criticisms of hypocrisy and contradictory stances, especially with the question of Busby’s mental capabilities.
