TOP STORIES FOR MARCH 8

See news from left-, center-, and right-rated sources with our Headline Roundups and Balanced Web Search results on these stories:

  • Tucker Carlson's Monday and Tuesday night Fox News (Right bias) shows featured never-before-seen Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot footage. Some said Carlson deceptively selected footage to frame the riot as mostly peaceful. Others said the new footage showed the riot wasn't as bad as many said.

  • A bipartisan group of senators introduced a bill Tuesday that could lead to a nationwide ban of the app TikTok. The Chinese-owned app has faced scrutiny over the data it collects on its large American user base.

  • Two of the four U.S. citizens kidnapped in Mexico were found deadand the other two were found alive and returned to the U.S. Officials say the group was likely mistaken for Haitian drug smugglers by local cartels.

  • Chinese leaders called out the United States this week in a rare, direct rebuke. China's new foreign minister Qin Gang said that if the U.S. continues "down the wrong path, no amount of guardrails can prevent derailing, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation."

Many politicians and media voices support continued and increased aid to counter the threat posed by Russia and show support for global democracy. Others question "groupthink" around the aid, and worry that U.S. military stockpiles are being depleted.

ENVIRONMENTALISM VS CAPITALISM

A massive oil drilling project proposed in Alaska created interesting allegiances and divides over financial stability and wildlife protection.

Many Alaskan officials, from the Republican governor and Democratic congresspeople to local mayors and Alaska Native leaders, support the project as a financial boon for the region. Many environmentalists, millions of whom have signed petitions opposing the project, say it will put local species and ecosystems at high risk.
