Homosexuality

While many people, particularly conservatives, still use homosexual as the standard term to describe a person who identifies as LGBTQ or same-sex attracted, the word is considered derogatory in many other circles. Homosexual fell into disfavor with gay and lesbian people in the 1960s and perhaps earlier, as it was most often used to condemn both the behavior and the people group in religiously conservative faith environments.  Many LGBTQ advocates point to the pejorative nature of the term homosexual by reminding those who use it that the word was originally, and perhaps exclusively, created to translate Scriptures that condemn same-sex relationships in the Bible.  Leading media outlets have changed their style manuals to discourage use of the term as well.
