Feds Reportedly Believe They Have Enough Evidence to Charge Hunter Biden
AllSides Summary
Federal investigators believe they have enough evidence to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and lying on gun purchase paperwork, multiple outlets reported Thursday.
The decision to bring charges against President Joe Biden’s son falls to Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, an appointee of former President Donald Trump. The investigation into the younger Biden’s taxes focused on whether he had disclosed all his income from various business ventures. The other part of the investigation concerned paperwork from a 2018 handgun purchase, in which he indicated he did not use illegal drugs; he later admitted to “smoking crack every 15 minutes” during that period in a memoir.
The Washington Post (Lean Left bias) first reported the story, but it was soon confirmed by others; CBS News (Lean Left bias) reported that the FBI had chargeable evidence “months ago,” and Fox News (Right bias) reported that charges could be “imminent.” Hunter Biden’s attorney told The Hill (Center bias) that the reports’ anonymous sources “appear to be violating the law to prejudice a case against a person who is a target simply because of his family name.”
Coverage was common across the spectrum but more prominently featured in right-rated outlets, which have closely followed allegations against Hunter Biden since the New York Post’s (Lean Right bias) October 2020 story about his laptop. Left-rated outlets tended to instead feature President Biden’s marijuana pardons as their top stories.
