Will the Senate Pass the Same-Sex Marriage Bill?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Senate is now considering a same-sex marriage bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act, to codify same-sex marriage after 47 House Republicans voted with House Democrats in favor of the bill.

The bill would repeal the 1996 Clinton-era Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. That law has since been overshadowed by the Supreme Court's 2015 decision in Obergefell vs. Hodges, which legalized gay marriage nationwide. The Senate's companion bill to the Respect for Marriage Act is co-sponsored by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Rob Portman (R-OH). Portman says it's possible that 10 Republicans will support the bill and break the Senate filibuster threshold of 60 votes. Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) have also indicated that they may support the bill.

Some conservatives oppose the bill because it takes the issue out of state law authority. The bill been pushed after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade last month, effectively sending the issue of abortion legality back to the states.  According to a June poll from Gallup (Center bias), 71% of U.S. adults think that same-sex unions should be recognized by law, including 84% of Democrats and 55% of Republicans.

Left- and center-rated sources often focused on which Republican senators will oppose or support the bill. Some right-rated outlets focused more on the argument that legalizing same-sex marriage should be left up to states.
