How Much Influence Will Trump Have Over The 2022 GOP Primary Elections?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

As the 2022 primary elections begin next week, many political analysts are wondering how much influence the endorsements from former president Donald Trump will have over the 2022 GOP primaries.

Trump has endorsed 144 candidates running for general office in 2022, according to Ballotpedia. The first indicator of Trump's influence over the Republican Party will be on Tuesday in Ohio’s GOP Senate primary, where he has endorsed J.D. Vance. Other notable candidates endorsed by Trump include Alabama's Mo Brooks, Nebraska's Charles Herbster, North Carolina's Ted Budd,  and Pennsylvania's "Dr." Mehmet Oz.

The Washington Times (Lean Right bias) emphasized how Vance's political future "brightened considerably" once he was endorsed by Trump and cited multiple polls that found the former president’s endorsement "to be helping." The outlet also said Trump's influence over the Republican Party "could further solidify" if Vance wins the election on Tuesday.

The New York Times (Lean Left bias) mentioned how Vance has recently "zoomed to the top of the public polls," and also said Trump's endorsement is "no magic wand," citing a poll that found Republicans were split on whether an endorsement from Trump would make any difference over the candidates they vote for. "Everyone knows Trump still has juice," the outlet noted, "but nobody is sure just how much juice."
