Sandy Hook Families Agree to $73 Million Settlement With Gun Manufacturer Remington

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The families of those killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting agreed on Tuesday to settle liability claims against Remington Arms for $73 million, ending a yearslong legal battle

Remington, the now-bankrupt manufacturer of the Bushmaster XM15-E2S semi-automatic rifle used in the shooting, previously offered a $33 million settlement in July 2021. Because gun makers are protected from liability for crimes committed with their products, the Sandy Hook families focused their case on the way Remington had allegedly marketed its weapons “to all people for all uses,” including to at-risk men. “The immunity protecting the gun industry is not bulletproof,” said attorney Joshua Koskoff, adding, “We hope they realize they have skin in the game, instead of blaming literally everybody else.”

Some outlets like ABC News (Lean Left) and BBC News (Center) said the settlement was the first time a gun maker had been “held liable” for a mass shooting in the U.S. However, it was unclear whether Remington admitted responsibility or legal liability in the settlement agreement. Coverage in right-rated outlets tended not to make such statements.
