Pride Month 2022 Celebrates LGBTQ+ Rights Amid Transgender Controversies

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Wednesday marked the beginning of Pride Month, a celebration of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights.

President Joe Biden formally recognized Pride Month on Tuesday, saying, “This month, we honor the resilience of LGBTQI+ people, who are fighting to live authentically and freely ... And we recommit to delivering protections, safety, and equality to LGBTQI+ families so that everyone can realize the full promise of America.” Biden also called on Congress to pass the Equality Act, which would ban discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation and gender identity in federally funded programs.

Apart from a 2019 tweet by former President Donald Trump, no Republican president has recognized Pride Month. In 2021, polling by Gallup (Center bias) showed that 70% of Americans supported legal same-sex marriage and 69% said “gay or lesbian relations” were morally acceptable. However, 51% said “changing one’s gender” was morally wrong, vs. 46% saying it was morally acceptable.

News and opinion coverage of Pride Month was rare in major right-rated outlets on Wednesday. However, several local outlets published op-eds about the celebration. Coverage and voices from the left tended to support acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities and criticize bills passed by Republican state legislators. Some voices from the right criticized what they called “radical gender theory”; one article in The American Conservative (Right bias) used a derogatory term for trans people in its first sentence.
