New Hampshire Abolishes Death Penalty, Overriding Governor's Veto in Bipartisan Effort

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The New Hampshire Senate voted to pass the 'anti-death penalty' bill, overriding the Governor's veto, Thursday. The New Hampshire House had already passed the bill again to override Governor Chris Sununu's veto, however, today's motion would allow the bill to become law. The bill passed by the smallest possible margin in both chambers; sixteen to eight in the upper house, with both Republicans and Democrats voting on each side of the measure. New Hampshire has not executed anyone since 1939, and only has one person on death row- Michael Addison. It is unclear as to whether Addison's life will be spared given the new law.
