McCormick Concedes to Oz in Pennsylvania GOP Senate Primary

Summary from the AllSides News Team

David McCormick on Friday evening conceded in Pennsylvania’s Republican Senate primary to Dr. Mehmet Oz amid an ongoing statewide recount.

Despite a slight lead in recounted mail-in ballots, McCormick said it was "now clear" that the Republican nominee was Oz. The TV celebrity doctor led McCormick by 922 votes in the initial count after the May 17 primary. Many analysts saw the Pennsylvania primary race as a key indicator of how much influence former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Oz back in April, still has over the Republican Party. Oz will now face off against Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, who secured the Democratic nomination just days after suffering a stroke.

Outlets across the spectrum suggested that Fetterman's victory in the upcoming midterm race could be the Democrats' "best chance" to strengthen their "fragile 50-50 control of the Senate." Left-rated outlets were more likely to underscore how many of Trump’s "endorsed candidates" have failed to win in the GOP primary races, potentially opening the doors "for a post-Trump candidate in 2024." Some right-rated outlets highlighted how "die-hard Trump supporters" were critical of Oz's stance on a number of Republican issues such as abortion, gun control and transgender rights.
