Iran Warns of Increased Uranium Production

Summary from the AllSides News Team

In a letter sent Thursday to European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif described new steps the country is taking to boost uranium supplies in a way that would breach the Iranian nuclear accord. Iran's Atomic Energy Organization spokesman told reporters Saturday that the country is indeed advancing nuclear research, but said that it has no immediate plans to construct new weapons. Iran had set a July deadline for the EU to help remedy effects of United States sanctions, but the request was not formally met. Most outlets on the left and center prominently acknowledged Iran's reported lack of intention to build new weapons; others, particularly on the right, mentioned it later in coverage or not at all.
