IEA Proposes 10-Point Plan To Cut Oil Use Amid Putin's Invasion of Ukraine

The International Energy Agency has proposed a 10-point plan to cut oil use amid the emerging global energy crisis "triggered by" Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

Most of the advised measures in the IEA's 10-point plan will "require changes in the behavior of consumers, supported by government measures." If fully implemented, the Paris-based organization estimates that "advanced economies" can reduce oil demand by 2.7 million barrels a day within the next four months. Some of the proposed actions to conserve oil include extending the number of work-at-home days, reducing speed limits, lowering public transportation fees and enforcing car-free Sundays in large cities. Fatih Birol, the IEA’s executive director, said that oil markets are facing an "emergency situation" during a virtual news conference on Friday morning. She also predicted that circumstances "may get worse" over the next few months if IEA member countries don't act soon. 

Left-rated outlets were more likely to accentuate how the IEA said its 10-point plan also exists "to tackle climate change and reduce air pollution." The New York Times (Lean Left bias) promoted clean energy as "the ultimate solution to tackling global warming and reducing energy dependency on other countries." Some right-rated outlets angled the story as a demand from the IEA that asks citizens to "sacrifice" some of their routine habits. The opening line of the report from Breitbart (Right bias) read, "Give up your car and start walking. That’s an order."
