House Freedom Caucus Asks McCarthy to Attempt to Remove Pelosi As House Speaker

On Friday, the House Freedom Caucus sent a letter to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) requesting he motion to vacate the House Speaker's chair, removing Nancy Pelosi from her position, next week. The conservative House Freedom Caucus cited Pelosi's refusal to seat Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Jim Banks on the committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol breach; In the letter, the group also cited “allowing proxy voting" and "insulting security measures like metal detectors for Members coming to the floor to vote” as reasons for Pelosi's removal. On Thursday, Pelosi announced the committee will proceed despite GOP "antics." 

Outlets from across the spectrum speculated that the motion is likely to fail in the Democrat-led House; some outlets mentioned a plan by "Trump loyalists" to reinstate former President Donald Trump as president by removing Pelosi and installing Trump as House Speaker, then impeaching President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is urging Kevin McCarthy to try to boot Nancy Pelosi from her position as speaker, a sign of further escalating tensions after the California Democrat vetoed two of the House Minority Leader’s GOP picks from the Jan. 6 select committee.

In a letter Friday, the far-right group asked McCarthy to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31 “to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosi’s authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House.”

A bloc of House conservatives on Friday pressed Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to force a floor vote by next week to oust Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for blocking two Republicans from serving on the special committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Such a vote on what’s known as a “motion to vacate the chair” would be quickly rejected by Democrats, who control the majority, and some moderate Republicans.
