Hate Crimes Rose to 11-Year High in 2019, FBI Reports

The total number of reported hate crimes rose from 7,120 in 2018 to 7,314 in 2019, according to new FBI data. The 2019 figure was the highest since 2008, when there were 7,783 reported incidents; reported hate crimes rose from 6,121 in 2016 to 7,175 in 2017. 2019 also set a new record for hate crime murders with 51, almost half of which happened in the racially-motivated El Paso Walmart shooting. The FBI report is based on voluntary reporting by law enforcement agencies; the 2019 numbers come from 2,172 of 15,588 participating agencies. Coverage came mostly from center- and left-rated outlets, some of which tied the increase to President Donald Trump and focused on increased hate crimes against Hispanic people. Some coverage in right-rated outlets focused on the increase in hate crimes against Jews.
