Civilian Evacuations Begin in Mariupol

Summary from the AllSides News Team

On Sunday, the Ukrainian government and the United Nations stated that Russian forces have allowed civilians trapped in the fight for control of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol to start leaving the city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office said that a group of 100 refugees were being led away by Red Cross monitors from the Azovstal steel plant, and that the evacuees were expected to arrive in Zaporizhzhia on Monday.  Previous efforts to bus out civilians and establish a "humanitarian corridor" have repeatedly broken down.

Soon after some civilians were evacuated from the Azovstal steel plan in Mariupol, Russian forces reportedly bombed the plant in a continued effort to secure full control of the city, despite continued defiance on the part of Ukraine.
