Pro-Choice Protests Across US After Supreme Court Decision

Summary from the AllSides News Team

Thousands of pro-choice supporters have gathered at rallies across the nation in protest of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade

The ruling, which spurred divided reactions from across the spectrum, granted states the legal authority to pass laws that criminalize abortions at any point during pregnancy. Abortion bans will go into effect in several states within the next few weeks, while at least 16 states and Washington, D.C. put laws in place that automatically keep abortion legal before Roe was overturned.

Left-rated outlets were more likely to label protesters as "demonstrators" and "activists." Some right-rated outlets were more likely to refer to them as "pro-abortion extremists" and "marchers." Coverage from left-rated outlets highlighted how police officers used tear gas to "disperse crowds" as well as sentiments from those who "marched to voice their anger" about the ruling, some of which compared the "angry" atmosphere to "when Trump got elected." Individual cases of vandalism were more likely to be highlighted by right-rated outlets, some of which noted that many of the "violent responses" have been "claimed" by a group called Jane’s Revenge that has called for "action" against the pro-life movement.
