EPA rules could close coal-fired power plants in Texas, ERCOT chief says

AUSTIN – ERCOT’s chief is crying foul over new environmental regulations that the head of the state’s power grid operator said could erode the power grid’s resiliency. ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas said the new emissions rules for fossil fuel power plants, set to take effect July 8, are “exacerbating the reliability risks given forecasted load growth,” Vegas said during a recent meeting of ERCOT’s board. The Environmental Protection Agency rules would place constraints on mercury and greenhouse gas emissions from existing coal power plants and certain new natural gas plants....
