Fast-moving Aero Fire forces evacuations, closes highway heading toward Yosemite

A 900-acre wildfire in Calaveras County, halfway between Stockton and Yosemite National Park, prompted evacuations and forced the closure of portions of Highway 4 on Monday as fire crews attempted to control its rapid spread. The blaze, dubbed the Aero Fire, was spreading at a “rapid rate” as of 4 p.m., said officials with Cal Fire’s Tuolumne-Calaveras unit. Within hours of breaking out, the fire had grown to nearly 1,000 acres, forcing officials to close the state highway near Copperopolis, an unincorporated town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada....
