Hawaii students learn English by writing about immigration

Students in Waipahu High School’s English Learner Program discuss how to improve their stories, published in three books since 2021 under a state literacy development grant. Pauleen Figuracion, left, Christian Tangonan and Evon Lozano participated in the English Learner Program and received scholarships from the sales of the books that include their stories. “Windows and Mirrors” and “Holding On” were the first two books written by Waipahu High School students in the English Learner Program.
