Juneteenth is observed on June 19 to commemorate the effective end of slavery in the United States. The occasion was first celebrated in Texas in 1865 during the aftermath of the Civil War, after enslaved people had been declared free by the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth commemorations have been occurring in Arizona long before the observance was recognized as a federal holiday.
