Pride Month in the United States begins each June to mark the June 28, 1969, uprising in response to a police raid of the beloved New York City gay bar Stonewall. The outrage sparked a new chapter in the LGBTQ+ movement in which activists could organize openly. Historically, the subject of queer history beyond Stonewall has not been widely taught in schools.
