Restoration at Great Cypress Swamp after centuries of timbering, fires and draining

• Southern Sussex County's Great Cypress Swamp used to encompass over 50,000 acres, but was nearly destroyed by centuries of fires, logging, ditching and draining. • Today, nonprofit Delaware Wild Lands is restoring the swamp, of which they own over 10,000 acres. • The Great Cypress Swamp is critical to air and water quality in Sussex County and surrounding areas. • Numerous major fires at the swamp are detailed in old newspaper articles, the last being in the 1930s.
