DEM boosts spotted lanternfly response as population increases in RI

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Spotted lanternflies, an invasive species originating in China, have increased in numbers over the past year, causing growing concerns among Department of Environmental Management (DEM) officials. According to the DEM’s website, the bugs can cause significant damage to important plants, including grapevines, apple trees, stone fruit trees, and walnut trees. The first confirmed spotting of the insect in Rhode Island was in August 2021 in Warwick. A year later, another spotted lanternfly was confirmed along Route 7 in Smithfield.
