Record cold prompts record demand for electricity in the Flathead

While this winter wasn’t one of the coldest on record, it did have a few cold snaps. January saw an extreme cold snap across western Montana, and hit the Flathead Valley hard. In Kalispell, the frigid temperatures strained power grids and left many people shivering in the cold until electricity could be returned to their homes. New power company data shows 9,552 customers in the Flathead experienced outages. The record set during this period was 1,500 people without power at one time.
