Wildfire in west-central Nebraska burns 71,000 acres and damages homes

Most of the Betty's Way Fire was contained Tuesday afternoon as crews continued to battle the more-than-70,000-acre fire in Lincoln and Custer Counties. One home was destroyed and another damaged, as were "a handful" of outbuildings, as the fire raced across open ground northwest of North Platte Monday amid high winds and red flag warnings. As of 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, the fire was 72% contained, said Erv Portis, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency.
