House Republicans Enter September Slog Spoiling for Impeachment, Shutdown Fights

House Republicans return Tuesday with just 19 days to fund the federal government, a daunting task complicated by everything else conservative hardliners have laid out — including killing any more Ukraine aid, impeaching President Joe Biden, and potentially ending Kevin McCarthy’s nascent speakership — as their top priorities. 

McCarthy joins this post-recess gauntlet a week behind Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who mostly quashed succession talk by jumping back into work right after Labor Day and refusing to give specifics about his high-profile health scares.
