City plans to open Portland Expo as temporary shelter for asylum seekers

City staff are planning to reopen the Portland Expo as a temporary emergency shelter for asylum seekers as soon as April 10. Portland is again seeing a wave of new asylum seekers into the city that rivals numbers reported in 2019 and is severely straining city resources. The city has welcomed 743 people since Jan. 1. The plans are detailed in a new memo from Interim City Manager Danielle West to Mayor Kate Snyder and the City Council that is expected to be presented at a special meeting on Monday....
