Russian Forces Battle to Cross River in Bakhmut, as Fighting in Ukraine Intensifies

Russian forces fought Saturday to cross the narrow river that bisects the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut as the grinding battle there intensified ahead of an expected Ukrainian counteroffensive aimed at recapturing Russian-occupied territory.
Ukrainian forces have been pushed out of positions on the eastern side of the river, which runs north to south and now marks the front line between Wagner Group paramilitary fighters spearheading the Russian offensive in Bakhmut and Ukrainian troops defending the city.
