For the first time in Pa., a Black woman becomes speaker of the House of Representatives

Philadelphia Democratic Rep. Joanna McClinton was elected on Tuesday as speaker of Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives, becoming the first Black woman in state history to hold that post. McClinton, 40, becomes the second person in this 2023-24 legislative session to hold the post after her fellow Democratic Rep. Mark Rozzi of Berks County resigned Tuesday. Rozzi made a point of saying he wanted to be the 102nd vote in the 203-member chamber to support McClinton’s election.
