Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and a coterie of senior U.S. officials piled onto a plane to Mexico City to try to stop Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from giving a planned fiery speech denouncing alleged U.S. infringement on Mexico’s national sovereignty. A trade dispute was brewing between U.S. and Canadian officials and their Mexican counterparts over perceived Mexican favoritism in contracting local energy companies.
