In March, The New York Times declared to its readers that a “single bitcoin transaction now requires more than 2,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, or enough energy to power the average American household for 73 days”.

The claim will have seemed credible to the vast majority of people who eye bitcoin with deep suspicion. It coincided with the launch of a lobbying campaign by Greenpeace, which directly linked bitcoin’s proof-of-work mining system to climate change.
