Case of monkeypox confirmed in Dallas traveler who had recently gone to Nigeria

A case of the rare viral disease monkeypox was confirmed in a Dallas traveler who had recently gone to Nigeria, according to the CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the patient is now hospitalized.

“Monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious viral illness that typically begins with flu-like illness and swelling of the lymph nodes and progresses to a widespread rash on the face and body,” read the Friday alert from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
