POWAY, Calif. – A funeral will be held Monday for Lori Gilbert-Kaye, the victim of a shooting at a southern California synagogue on Saturday who was hailed as a hero when gunfire erupted.
Authorities said a 34-year-old man and a young girl were struck by shrapnel but survived the attack during a Passover service at the Chabad of Poway near San Diego.
Kaye, 60, died while protecting Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who was evacuating children from the synagogue after gunfire broke out, Goldstein said.
