Hagel Says U.S. to Pause Troop Drawdown in Afghanistan

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Saturday said that up to 1,000 additional U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan for the next few months to make up for a temporary shortfall in allied forces.

The White House had announced it would draw down to 9,800 U.S. troops by the end of the month, but delays in approving security agreements with Afghanistan have sent European allies scrambling to approve their own promised levels of troop deployments.
