Drones over America: Virginia, five other states picked for drone testing sites

The federal government Monday finally chose six “test sites” where vital research into drones will be conducted, marking a key step forward in the larger effort to safely integrate the unmanned craft into the national airspace.
The locations — including one to be operated by Virginia Tech — were to be announced in the summer of 2012, but several factors, including an intense national debate over the privacy implications of drones, delayed the process for more than a year.
