Villaraigosa's Pragmatic Streak
One more sign Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has higher ambitions: he's joined the "Fix the Debt" campaign urging Congress and President Obama to reach a grand deal to tame the country's $16 trillion debt.
The outfit is comprised primarily of business leaders and former lawmakers, including Wyoming and New Hampshire Sens. Alan Simpson and Judd Gregg, both Republicans, and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat. Mr. Villaraigosa was the first sitting Democratic lawmaker—and former labor leader—to join. Progressives can't believe that he'd lock arms with corporate executives and Republicans.
