A June 2023 AllSides Independent Review found that Western Journal is transparent about its bias. Its About page states (retrieved June 6, 2023): “Editorially, The Western Journal upholds traditional Christian values as articulated in the Bible… Politically, The Western Journal advocates for broadly conservative positions on most issues, including abortion, national defense, small government, marriage, tax policy and individual freedom.

A previous AllSides review circa 2016 found Western Journalism (Western Journal's previous moniker) stated it featured "conservative, libertarian, free market and pro-family writers and broadcasters."

The Western Journal was founded in 2009 as WesternJournalism.com, a project of the Western Center for Journalism, according to Western Journal's About page (retrieved June 6, 2023). The Western Journal was previously known as Western Journalism. It was founded by political consultant Floyd Brown in 2008. The Western Center for Journalism's founders include Joseph Farah, who is a journalist, author and editor-in-chief of WorldNetDaily (WND).
