Washington Post Fact Check Rated Lean Left in July 2021 Small Group Editorial Review

The Washington Post fact check section has a Lean Left bias, according to a July 2021 Small Group Editorial Review by AllSides editors on the left, center, and right. 

The Washington Post displays fact-checking on a page called the Fact Checker by Glenn Kessler. The Post says it aims to find the truth behind “the statements of political figures regarding issues of great importance, be they national, international or local.” They rate claims using the “Pinocchio Test,” a scale from one to four, with four being the biggest lie. 

The July 2021 review by AllSides found The Fact Checker was in line with the Washington Post’s Lean Left bias rating. It showed story choice bias by choosing to focus on issues commonly considered important to the political left, such as police funding and claims made by former President Donald Trump.

The Washington Post Fact-Checkers has signed on to the code of principles set forth by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), created by Poynter.
