Some look back on this signature legislation from Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency in the 1960’s as a crucial step towards a more equitable and fair society - while others see it as a concerning turning point away from a society of freedom and personal responsibility.  Laying aside whether it was a good thing, everyone agrees that this initiative was another key moment (building on changes during The Great Depression) where the federal government expanded its reach considerably into American lives.
